Exiting though through the sliding door, we discover a bronze polka dotted pumpkin sculpture by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, who is receiving the attention she rightly deserves in the art world. Strangely enough, Kusama identifies with the pumpkin as an object of self-portrait. Including her artwork in the collection is an opportunity to consider how each artist ‘sees their world’. For Kusama, it is a world filled with dots, literally.
KAWS takes up a giant footprint with his ‘At this time’ companion sculpture in wood. This figure welcomes guests arriving by boat and is a fan of children climbing onto its shoes. It is also a vulnerable artwork, exposed to the elements. This tells us that the collectors are risk takers. They certainly know what they love. And we have no barriers to giving this loveable companion a hug.
Journey outside toward the marina, to discover British artist Ben Eine’s ‘Extra Ordinary’ wall mural. Here we see the collectors take street art to the next level by tagging their own building so that visitors by boat can consider both the artwork and its statement in the context of Bermuda’s natural beauty and the hotel’s refined architecture.
Please take a short walk down the path toward the marina bar. Here you will find a large-scale commissioned installation by Julian Opie. His recognizable larger-than-life figures are defined by thick outlines, heads bowed down toward handheld devices. Easily visible from a passing vessel, the figures appear to hover. Up close, this work in bronze is developing a beautiful patina set in British limestone.
